IPL 2020: Match 41, CSK vs MI – CSK’s record defeat, Boult’s 4-fer, A record collapse and more stats

Mumbai Indians thumped the Chennai Super Kings by ten wickets with a collective effort during the game hosted by the Sharjah. The opening spells of Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah left CSK to 3/4 which soon became 21/5. Dhoni got out in the first over after powerplay at the score of 30/6 but Sam Curran rescued CSK with a 47-ball 52. Curran’s batting effort took CSK to finish with 114/9 which was chased down by Mumbai’s new opening pair of Ishan Kishan (68* off 37) and Quinton de Kock (46* off 37).

Here are all the statistical highlights from a 10-wicket defeat for the Chennai Super Kings during CSK vs MI:
A record defeat for the Super Kings:
1 – Chennai Super Kings lost a match by 10 wickets for the first time in their history. Their previous biggest defeat in terms of wickets was by 9 wickets, which was also against Mumbai Indians. The MI team chased down a target of 157 by losing only one wicket way back in 2008. 

46 – Super Kings’ defeat with 7.4 overs to spare during CSK vs MI is also their biggest in terms of balls to spare. Their previous biggest is by 40 balls during the 2011 edition against Delhi Daredevils while defending a target of 111.

115 – MI’s chase of 115 is the 2nd highest successful chase in IPL history by any team with seven or more overs to spare. Deccan Chargers chased down 155 in only 12 overs without losing a wicket against MI during the inaugural edition.

CSK’s record collapse:
3 – The CSK’s top four collectively scored three runs during CSK vs MI; the lowest aggregate by any team’s top four in an IPL match. The previous lowest was four runs by Kochi Tuskers Kerala against Deccan Chargers in 2011.

5 – The Chennai Super Kings lost as many as five wickets inside the powerplay overs; the most they ever during the powerplay of an IPL match. Only Kochi Tuskers Kerala (6) against Deccan Chargers during 2011 home game lost more than five wickets during powerplay overs of an IPL match. (RCB lost seven wickets against RR in 2019 season’s home game during the match reduced to 5 overs.)

A record partnership to CSK’s rescue:
43 – The 43-run partnership between Sam Curran and Imran Tahir is now the highest in the history of IPL for 9th or lower wicket. CSK’s MS Dhoni-Ravi Ashwin put on 41 against MI for the 9th wicket in 2013 IPL final while Tahir was also involved in a 41-run 9th wicket stand for CSK with Dwayne Bravo in the 2018 season opener also against MI.

52 – Sam Curran became only the 3rd player to score a fifty in the IPL while batting at No.7 or CSK. Dwayne Bravo scored 68 in the 2018 season opener against MI while MS Dhoni scored an unbeaten 63 in the 2013 season final also against MI.

Boult’s maiden 4-fer:
4/18 – Trent Boult registered maiden 4-wicket haul in his IPL career with his bowling figures of 4/18 during CSK vs MI. His previous best figures in IPL were 3/19 during the 2015 season game for SRH vs KXIP.

De Kock’s milestone behind the wickets:
50 – With the four dismissals during CSK vs MI, Quinton de Kock became only the 9th wicketkeeper in the IPL to complete 50 keeping dismissals. Only Adam Gilchrist (67) has got to 50 IPL dismissals among overseas wicketkeepers in the IPL.

A rare opening pair of left-handers:
1 – Ishan Kishan and Quinton de Kock became the first left-handers opening pair of Mumbai Indians in the IPL. The game in Sharjah was only the 2nd instance of Ishan opening the batting for MI. He bagged a duck when he opened along with Suryakumar Yadav against RCB in 2018.

4 – The pair of Ishan and De Kock is only the 4th left-handed pair in the history of IPL to share a century partnership for the first wicket. Matthew Hayden-Parthiv Patel (106 vs RCB in 2009), David Warner-Shikhar Dhawan (Six times) and Quinton de Kock-Rishabh Pant (115 vs GL in 2016) are the other left-handed pairs to share century opening stands in the IPL.
