IPL 2020: Match 39, KKR vs RCB – Siraj’s record spell, KKR’s collapse, Lowest 20-over total and more stats

Royal Challengers Bangalore got the better of Kolkata Knight Riders for the 2nd time in the IPL 2020 as they cruised to an 8-wicket win on Wednesday. Mohammed Siraj’s opening spell of 3-2-2-3 blown the KKR team who made only 17/4 in the powerplay. Eoin Morgan top-scored for KKR with a 34-ball 30 but the RCB spinners played a key role in keeping the opponent down to 84/8. Chasing a low total, the RCB team had a 46-run opening stand which helped them to bag two points with 39 balls to spare.

KKR’s record lowest total:
84/8 – Kolkata Knight Riders’ total of 84/8 during KKR vs RCB is now the lowest 20-over total in the history of IPL. The previous lowest total in the IPL by a team that played out 20 overs was Kings XI Punjab’s 92/8 against Chennai Super Kings in 2009.

3 – Royal Challengers Bangalore now have won each of their last three meetings against KKR in the IPL; only the 2nd instance of RCB where they won three consecutive IPL games against KKR. They won three successive meetings against KKR across 2010 and 2011 editions.

Maidens galore:
3 – As many as three bowlers of Royal Challengers Bangalore bowled a maiden over during KKR vs RCB. This is the first instance of three players chipping with a maiden for a team in an IPL match. No team before KKR on Wednesday batted out more than two maiden overs in an IPL match. Those four maidens are also the joint-most in an IPL match equalling the four maiden overs bowled by CSK (2) and RCB (2) bowlers during the 2019 season opener at Chepauk.

KKR’s top-order collapse:
2 – The two runs by the top three batsmen of Kolkata Knight Riders are the joint 2nd fewest managed by any team’s top three in an IPL match. Deccan Chargers’ top three batsmen bagged ducks during the 2009 edition game against CSK while Mumbai Indians’ top three batters also aggregated two runs against PWI during 2012 edition.

Siraj creates history:
1 – Mohammed Siraj became the first player in the history of IPL to bowl multiple maiden overs in a match. Siraj’s first two overs during KKR vs RCB turned out to be maidens.

13 – The first run scored off the bat in Siraj’s bowling was on the 13th he bowled. The 12 dot balls bowled by Siraj are the most by any bowler in an IPL game before conceding the first run.

An economical effort from Siraj:
8 – The eight runs conceded by Mohammed Siraj during his four overs are the joint 2nd fewest by an Indian pacer in an IPL game. (Min: 4 overs bowled) Ashish Nehra conceded only six runs in his four overs during the 2009 season game for DD against KXIP while Praveen Kumar also gave only eight runs across his four overs in 2012 for KXIP against RCB.

8 – Siraj’s eight runs are the 2nd fewest conceded in an IPL match after bowling full four overs for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Yuzvendra Chahal finished with analyses of 4-1-6-1 during the 2019 season opener against CSK.

100th catch in IPL for ABD:
100 – AB de Villiers completed 100 catches in the IPL with the two catches he claimed off Mohammed Siraj during KKR vs RCB (85 as a fielder, 15 as a keeper). He is now the first overseas player and only the 4th player after Dinesh Karthik (114), MS Dhoni (112) and Suresh Raina (102) to claim 100 catches in the league.

New milestone in boundaries for Kohli:
500 – With the two fours struck during the chase, Virat Kohli has completed 500 boundary fours in the Indian Premier League. Kohli is now the 2nd player after Shikhar Dhawan (575) to have struck 500 fours in the IPL.
