England Appoint Darren Gough as Fast Bowling Consultant Ahead of NZ Tests

Former sailor Darren Gough has been appointed England’s rapid bowling consultant for the warm-up period prior to the November two-round tour of New Zealand, the country’s cricket board (ECB) said Wednesday.

Gough claimed 229 wickets in 58 Tests for England between 1994 and 2003.

“I am delighted to have Darren on board,” England head coach Chris Silverwood said in a statement.

“I have known him for a long time and his vast knowledge and experience at the international level will drive our bowling unit towards the two-game test series. It will be excellent throughout the group and will be installed quickly.”

England does not have a bowling coach after Silverwood was promoted to the position of head coach earlier this month.

Gough, a former Silverwood Yorkshire teammate, will join the test team in Auckland on November 5 and work with the rhythm attack for two weeks before the first Test at Mount Maunganui that begins on November 21.

“It’s a great honor that Chris Silverwood and Ashley Giles ask them to participate in this elite environment,” Gough said.

“I will get a lot of experience and working at this level will benefit me as a long-term coach.”
