15th October 2000: Chris Cairns Special Takes New Zealand to Maiden ICC Title

On this day in 2000, a belligerent 102 * of Chris Cairns helped New Zealand claim his maiden and to date only the title of ICC when they defeated India by 4 wickets in the final of the ICC KnockOut Trophy, in Nairobi, Kenya. The final had the two best teams in the tournament facing each other and was shown at the level of cricket that was on display. India was ranked as a favorite after a clinical victory over South Africa in the semifinals, but New Zealand also showed remarkable resistance throughout the tournament. India started well after being sent to the bat with Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar adding 141 races to the post of opening in less than 27 overs. Ganguly, in particular, continued from where he left in the semifinals while stroking an elegant 117 of 130 balls, while Tendulkar broke a 69 of 83 balls to pave the way for a competitive Indian total of 264 for 6 of 50 overs.



Bowlers did well to withdraw things at the end after India had threatened to post a score greater than 300 at one stage.Venkatesh Prasad had problems with New Zealand hitters when he eliminated Craig Spearman and Stephen Fleming in rapid succession . Nathan Castle broke a registered trademark 37, but timely attacks from India had New Zealand in trouble with 132 by 5 on the 24th. Cairns and Chris Harris got together and created a crucial 122-race stand for the sixth wicket for all , but they stood on their side at the door of victory. Cairns rightly then hit the winning races also completing a century in the process to lead New Zealand to a victory with two extra balls.
