Three Sri Lankan U-19 players under the scanner after found drunk during the Asia Cup

Controversy and Sri Lankan cricket seems to be going hand-in-hand in the past few years. While the senior side has been in news after a majority of their players including the likes of T20I skipper Lasith Malinga, Thisara Perera refused to make themselves available for their white-ball tour of Pakistan, scheduled for later this month, citing security issues, their U-19 compatriots are now making the news for all the wrong reasons.

Three players from Sri Lanka’s U-19 team were found drunk in the hostel after the semi-final of the recently concluded ACC U-19 Asia Cup. The incident happened after the knockout game against India was abandoned due to persistent rain, forcing the players to return to their hotel rooms early.

Two of them happen to be batsmen
The sources in Sri Lanka have revealed the names of the name of the players involved but have requested that to not make it public, fearing that it might have a dire effect on their future prospects. Among the three players, two are suspected to be batsman while the other one is a spinner.

“They were drunken and then vomited in the hotel corridor. The doctor was called immediately and their blood samples were taken and the results were found to be positive”, the source was quoted as saying in Asian Age.
“A representative of the School Boys Association, who is also a member of the Ex-Co, suggested heavy punishment and accordingly, they will not be selected for the forthcoming U-19 tour of Bangladesh”, the source further revealed.
For the uninitiated, the ACC U-19 Asia Cup was recently held in Sri Lanka. The said incident took placing following the abandonment of the home sides’ semi-final against India. With India having defeated Sri Lanka earlier in the group stage, the hosts were knocked out of the tournament. India later went on to win the finals beating Bangladesh in a humdinger by 5 runs.
