Khaka, Chetty return to South Africa squad for India tour
Sune Luus will continue leading the South Africa team on their tour of India with regular skipper Dane van Niekerk unavailable due to an injury. Senior all-rounder Marizanne Kapp will be unavailable for the T20I leg of the tour while she’ll join the team for the ODI series.
Meanwhile, Ayabonga Khaka – who has been out of action for over a year having undergone a shoulder surgery – returns to the South Africa team, as does Trisha Chetty who was also away from the team for a lengthy period owing to a back injury. While Khaka is part of both squads, Chetty is part of the setup only for the ODI series.
The 25-year-old Khaka’s last international game for her country was during the ODI series against England in June 2018. However, the pacer recently featured in the Emerging Players’ series against Bangladesh in July-August in which she bowled economically in the two one-day and T20 matches while picking up two wickets. The 31-year-old Chetty, who also played in this series, showcased good form as she scored three successive half-centuries.
The selectors have named uncapped left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba in both the squads while Anneke Bosch returns to the ODI team having last played in 2016.
“We are excited with the crop of players selected for the bilateral tour of India,” said Clinton du Preez, the CSA Selection Convener. “With a few players not available for the tour, it gives us an opportunity to look at some options going into the upcoming New Zealand Away Series and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
“Nonkululeko Mlaba has been included as a new cap into the squad on the back of a successful Emerging Tour against Bangladesh and the Women’s T20 Super League. She is a talented left-arm spinner who will complement our bowling attack. Anneke Bosch has been a steady contributor for North West and was also part of the recent Emerging Squad, and she gives us as an extra all-rounder option.”
Head coach Hilton Moreeng reflected on the importance of the India tour. “This is a very important tour for us as we continue to gain competitive game time leading up to next year’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia. This is followed by the ODI series which is an important part of the qualification process for the ICC Women’s World Cup in 2021.”
South Africa begin their tour with two T20 practice games against India’s Board President’s XI on September 19 and 22, followed by five T20Is on September 24, 26, 29, October 1 and 4. All the T20Is will be day-night affairs, to be played in Surat while the ODI series will be held in Baroda on October 9, 11 and 14.
