IPL 2020: 3 Mistakes committed by the losing side in CSK vs RR

Chennai Super Kings faced their seventh loss of IPL 2020 as RR defeated them in a one-sided affair. After winning the toss, CSK started at a dismal note as they lost early wickets. Also, as the run-rate never rocketed, their innings ended at 125 runs in 20 overs. MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja stitched an important partnership but they failed to put on a decent total.

While defending the target, they started extremely well by picking up three important wickets at the top but they failed to proceed with the same. Jos Buttler and Steve Smith stitched a remarkable partnership to take RR home. With seven defeats in ten games, they are almost out of the contention for the playoffs and their qualification now depends on the result of other matches as well.

Here are the three mistakes committed by CSK in Match 37, CSK vs RR:-
1. No acceleration with the bat from CSK
CSK lost early wickets in this game and RR snatched the control. However, MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja build on a recovery partnership for the yellow army to take them to a decent total. They were scoring at 6 runs per over and with acceleration at the end, a decent total of around 150 was on the cards. However, CSK was not able to expedite at all till the very end and despite batting 20 overs, they finished with a score of 125 only.

2. Not using Sam Curran early on
While defending 125, CSK started very well with 3 wickets upfront. Deepak Chahar and Josh Hazlewood were bowling top-notch deliveries with the new ball and Chennai were back into the game. However, Steve Smith and Jos Buttler looked comfortable in the middle and the batting suddenly looked easy.

As CSK had a left-arm seamer in their ranks in Sam Curran, they should have tried him as the right-handers find it difficult to cope up with the left hander’s angle. Also, with such a low score under their belt, some quick bowling changes were needed but the same didn’t happen.

3. No out of the box move
CSK were playing a do or die game as they had already lost six matches in the tournament. With all of their previous moves failed, they should have pulled out a different trick from their bag to finally end their dismal run. However, they went on with the same pattern they have been following since the first game and failed again. If CSK wants to pull off some victories, they need to change the template in the upcoming matches.
