ICC World Cup 2019: Match 19, ENG v WI – England Player Ratings
The game between England and Windies didn’t pan out as per the expectations. The home team completely dominated this encounter and blew the Caribbean side apart. It was a mini-collapse of sorts after the Windies were put into bat first. The team lost Evin Lewis and Shai Hope early in the game. Chris Gayle looked entertaining but got out for 36 runs and couldn’t capitalise on the start.
Nicholas Pooran, though, looked solid and played a great knock and mustered 63 runs. Shimron Hetmyer really struggled through the course of his innings but still managed to get 39 runs. Windies lost their last 7 wickets for just 68 runs which was slightly disappointing. They failed to utilise 32 balls of their innings and were bowled out for just 212 in 44.4 overs which could have made quite a difference.
England had some injury woes with Jason Roy and Eoin Morgan in this game. But Joe Root took complete responsibility and played a blistering knock. He continued with his consistent run in the tournament and maintained a good strike rate as well. Root registered his 16th ODI century in this game and with support from Jonny Bairstow and Chris Woakes, he helped England to an 8-wicket win.

Jonny Bairstow – 7/10
Jonny Bairstow got England off to a good start. He hit 7 good boundaries during his knock and seemed to be in great touch. However, he failed to make the maximum use of this start that he got. Just when he was five runs short of a half-century, he got out to Shannon Gabriel. He was involved in a 95-run partnership with Joe Root.
Joe Root – 10/10
With Jason Roy not allowed to bat anywhere above 7, Joe Root opened the innings in his place. Had England lost a few quick wickets in this game, the likes of Eoin Morgan and Jason Roy would have been forced to walk out to bat. This could have potentially aggravated their injuries. But the English Test skipper took complete control and dominated the Windies bowlers. He scored an unbeaten 100 in this game and was terrific to watch. Root also picked up two important wickets with the ball.
Chris Woakes – 8.5/10
Chris Woakes did a fine job opening the bowling for England. Out of his five overs, two were maidens and he also dismissed the dangerous Evin Lewis. While he conceded 16 runs with the ball, he did a great job with the bat after he was promoted to bat at number three. He played the perfect second fiddle to Root and rotated the strike on a regular basis. He got out on 40 when his team was only 14 runs shy of a victory.
Jos Buttler – 1/10
Jos Buttler didn’t have much to do in this game. He captained the side when Eoin Morgan was off the field and took two catches behind the stumps.
Ben Stokes – 1.5/10
Ben Stokes bowled four overs in this match. However, he was slightly expensive and conceded 25 runs at an economy rate of 6.20. Ben Stokes walked out to bat at the fall of Woakes’ wicket and got to face 6 deliveries. He hit two consecutive boundaries to wrap things off for his team as England registered their fourth win of the tournament.
Jason Roy – Not Assigned
Jason Roy hurt his hamstring in the 8th over of the first innings and didn’t walk out to field again. He didn’t bat either in this match.
Eoin Morgan – Not Assigned
Eoin Morgan also injured himself during this game, he did his back and didn’t have many contributions to make.
Liam Plunkett – 5/10
Liam Plunkett was the first change bowler in this encounter. He got to bowl five overs where he gave away 30 runs at an economy rate of 6. The 34-year-old dismissed the danger man in the opposition, Chris Gayle, just as he was looking dangerous.
Jofra Archer – 8.5/10
Jofra Archer was excellent in this encounter and was literally unplayable at times. Playing against some of his former mates, he was absolutely on fire and put on display all of his class. In the 9 overs which he bowled in this game, Archer conceded just 30 runs and picked up three crucial wickets including the likes of Nicholas Pooran, Carlos Brathwaite as well as Sheldon Cottrell.
