Brisbane Heat Appoint Ryan Harris as Bowling Coach
Former Australian player Ryan Harris has been named bowling coach of the Brisbane Heat franchise for the next edition of the Big Bash League (BBL).
Harris, who was the club’s inaugural signing in the first season of BBL and played in the second season of the Heat Championship, will join Brisbane as a specialized bowling coach during the first half of the season. He will work alongside head coach Darren Lehmann and assistant coach James Hopes.
Harris will leave before the end of the BBL to complete his duties as Australia’s U19 coach for the ICC U19 Youth World Cup in South Africa early next year.
“We used Ryan as a bowling mentor at the beginning of the BBL when he was returning from an injury, and I know that Dan Vettori had him on his team in a similar role a few years ago,” Lehmann said.
Harris was a dominant figure for Australia as his spearhead, which claimed 113 scalp tests at 23.52 in a limited race for an injury.
He played in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Deccan Chargers and King’s XI Punjab.
Since his retirement in 2015, Harris has worked within the Cricket Australia high performance training program based at the Bupa National Cricket Center and is currently Justin Langer’s bowling coach with the Australian team during the Gillette T20 International series against Sri Lanka.
“I really enjoyed my time as a player with the Heat, and that was where I had the opportunity to immerse my toe in the water with respect to training,” said Harris.
“It’s another great opportunity for me to improve my experience as a coach with ‘Boof’ and prepare to work with some of the most talented young players in the country in the U19 World Cup next year,” he added.
